    The political framework of El Salvador is a presidential representative democratic republic with a multiform multi-party system. The President of El Salvador, is both head of state and head of government.

    According to the 1983 Constitution the three main powers are the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Power.

    Executive Power

    It's composed by the President of the Republic followed by the Vice-president, the Ministers, Vice-ministers and dependants functionaries.

    The President of the Republic is the maximum authority of the Executive Power (acting as Chief of State and Head of Government) and is supported by the Vice-president.

    Both are elected through popular vote every 5 years, and cannot be re-elected for a second consecutive period.

    Legislative power

    Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Legislative Assembly or Asamblea Legislativa. It is compose by 84 deputies which are elected, every three years, through popular vote and as such are sworn to "represent the entire county without being linked to any imperative order"

    "They shall not be violated and through the time are not to be held responsible for the opinions or votes." Art. 125 of El Salvador´s Constitution, (Cn.). (El Salvador's Constitution)

    Judiciary Power

    The Supreme Court or Corte Suprema is the branch with more decision power. It is composed by 15 judges or Magistrados which are selected by the Legislative Assembly;

    The 15 judges are assigned to four Supreme Court chambers - constitutional, civil, penal, and administrative conflict.

    Did you know?

    The capital of the country, San Salvador, was funded in 1525 and it's original name was "Quetzalcoatit‡n" meaning: "Land of Quetzals" (it is assumed there were a vast variety of this birds in the area).
