History
The National Flag was adopted on the 17th of May 1912 by the Legislative Power. This, by initiative of the then President of the Republic Dr. Manuel Enrique Araujo. Throughout the his short government he ordered a military review and concentration of Salvadorean citizens to commemorate de day of the Centro American Independence and decree the new official flag and National Coat of Arms.
The former President of the Republic Manuel Enrique Araujo, raised the flag infront of the Presidential Tribune of the Field Marte (Tribuna Presidencial del Campo de Marte) on the morning of the 15th of September 1912 therefore making it the new Symbol of the Republic.
The new flag was a symbol of the Central American Federation. It's colours and the legend "Dios Union Libertad" (God, Unity, Liberty") where chosen by order of General Manuel José Arce. This had been adopted by legislative decree on the 17th of May. This act was registered in the official annals on the 30th of May of the same year.
Flag Description
According with Chapter I, Art. 3 and 4 from the ¨Law of Patriotic Symbols¨ or "Ley de Simbolos Patrios" (Decree N. 115, dated Sept. 14, 1972) states that :
The national flag of El Salvador is a parallelogram of fabric composed by three horizontal stripes: the first one and the third one being blue and the middle one being white.
It's official dimensions are: 3.25 meters height by 1.89 width. Each stripe is 0.63 width. The flag can adjusted at any size viable as long as the colour, dimensions and proportions are kept.
The two blue stripes symbolise the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, which surround Central America. The white stripe symbolises peace.
In the middle of the white stripe the words "Dios Union Libertad" ("God Union Liberty") can be read. This letters are written in a golden colour and when on the flag, this can be used by any individual or any organisation that does not belong to the government (e.g. schools, public buildings, merchant boats, etc.)
The National coat of arms will be on the flag if this one is used by any military activity/ organisation ( airplanes, ships, etc) by any government organisations (e.g. Embassies, Government delegations, etc.) or when this one is being used by Casa Presidencial, the official residence of the President of the Republic.
