    The importance of declaring

It is always advisable to review the contents your bag and make sure you understand the consequences of not declaring products you have doubts of. If you don't declare illegal products, you will have committed an offence. If you're unsure about a product then it's best to contact the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). If you're unsure about goods you've already packed then it's best to declare them by walking UK Costumes. Then, if your product is illegal it will be taken away from you, but you won't be committing an offence or receive a fine. You will only receive an Official Notice of Surrender to record you have voluntarily declared your goods.

If you don't declare illegal products by walking through the green channel, you will have committed an offence. Detector dogs are especially trained to sniff out the goods so it's best not to try your luck. Your goods will be destroyed and you will receive an official Notice of Seizure, which is a written warning and means that your name will go on record. If it's a serious offence you may be detained for several hours, arrested or prosecuted, which could result in a fine or imprisonment.

Import controls are enforced to protect livestock, agricultural crops, wild flora and fauna and public health from exotic pests and diseases. The recent outbreak of the highly contagious Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and Avian Flu are just two examples of why these controls are in place.
